The MSCI World is a stock index from the provider MSCI. It tracks roughly 1,400 large- and mid-cap companies from 23 developed markets and is the most widely used basis for globally investing ETFs.
Weighting is by market capitalisation, so larger companies carry a greater weight. This results in a high US share of around 70 per cent.
Emerging markets are not included in the MSCI World; investors who want exposure to them usually combine it with an emerging-markets index or opt for a broader all-world index. The figures quoted can shift as markets move (as at 2025).
