A globally unique 12-character identifier for securities (International Securities Identification Number) that begins with a country code such as DE or US.
The ISIN (International Securities Identification Number) is a globally unique 12-character code for identifying securities. It starts with a country code (e.g., DE for Germany, IE for Ireland, US for the USA).
Examples: DE0007100000 (Daimler), IE00B4L5Y983 (iShares MSCI World). The ISIN is needed to identify a specific security unambiguously, particularly when searching within a portfolio or comparing different ETFs.
Besides the ISIN, there is also the WKN (Wertpapierkennnummer, the German securities identification number), used only in Germany, and the ticker symbol, used on exchanges.
